The Marmel legend

Most people who live along the coast, especially the elderly, know of the ‘Marmel’ legend.  It’s about a fish of unusual, not to say rather strange, appearance.  Sometimes it took on the shape of a swaddled infant.  It would talk and even answer questions; however, were it not put back in the sea, it could also bring bad luck.

The Marmel’s greatest sorrow lay in its nakedness.  So the fishermen sought to remedy this by giving it clothing, sometimes proper fishermen’s gloves before casting it back to the sea.  In return it would point them to new grounds rich in shoals of fish.

In general the Marmel was not considered to be a source of harm, but rather of comfort for a people in dire need of good weather and a plentiful supply of fish.

For us at Marmelkroken, the legend inspires us to provide a warm welcome to our guests on an island of outstanding beauty.
